Kevin Willmott is an obviously political film-maker – his ‘CSA: Confederate States of America’ hypothesised an alternate history in which the civil war was lost by the North; and he brought his next film ‘’ to Sundance this weekend. From the opening shot when a Native American woman opens the door of her house onto sun–split plains before stepping onto the gravel outside, it’s clear that Willmott knows his Westerns.

Plot: Two mortal enemies must band together to defend the ranch they’ve both staked their claim on in this rollicking starring Dean Cain and Natasha Henstridge. When B.J. (James Tupper) wagered half of his ranch in a bet with Shea (Cain). he never thought he’d come out on the losing end. Now that ownership of the ranch is split down the middle, the two gamblers can’t quite agree on anything. The most hotly contested debate to result from the wager isn’t the ranch, however, but the hand of the lovely Liz Calhoun (Allison Hossack). Both men want Liz, but neither man can have her. When a gang of bandits makes a bid for the ranch, B.J. and Shea momentarily put their differences aside to fight shoulder to shoulder against a common enemy.

Anyone who is expecting a word for word remake of the John Wayne classic will not be disappointed, With one glaring exception this Hallmark Channel remake sticks very close to the original story of a gunfighter reformed by a Quaker woman’s love,
The exception is that instead of an innocent young unmarried girl as Gail Russell played in the original, Deborah Kara Unger is a widow with a young boy to raise which she is doing with her parents. She’s a good woman, but even good women have their needs and when Lou Diamond Phillips as Quirt Evans literally lands on her doorstep, wounded after a gun battle, he gets her mojo going good and proper.
